WHAT DO I LOOK FOR
WHEN BUYING DIAMOND JEWELLERY

For most people - whether they realise it or not at the time - buying a diamond is a compromise between the factors of quality and cost. These factors, the four Cs - carat weight, colour, clarity and cut - are your guidelines. So it's wise to learn all you can about a diamond before making that all-important purchase.

CARAT WEIGHT

The carat is the unit used to measure diamond weight. There are 142 carats to the avoirdupois ounce, and each carat is further divided into 100 points.

Although size is significant, carat weight by itself is not the most important factor in determining a diamond's value, contrary to popular thought. Cutting, colour and clarity also determine the pre-carat price. A top colour, flawless half-carat diamond, for example, may be worth more than a warmer coloured, flawed one-carat stone.

On the other hand, because larger stones are more rare, they have a greater value per carat. If quality is equal, a two-carat diamond, for example, will be worth much more than two one-carat stones.

CUT AND ITS
INFLUENCE ON PRICE

It takes extraordinary skill and experience to cut 57 tiny facets with mathematical precision on an object a few hundredths of an inch in diameter, composed of the hardest material in the world. The cut of the round brilliant may deviate from the generally accepted proportions of table, crown, girdle and pavilion. However, a substantial deviation from these proportions results in a real decrease in value.

COLOUR

Colour in diamonds refers to body colour, not the surface rainbow of reflected light. Most diamonds described as white are nearly colourless but have a slight tinge of colour. Diamonds of a clear white, without colour, are very rare and valued accordingly.

CLARITY

Clarity is the degree of perfection visible to the trained eye using a 10x Lens. Most diamonds contain some inclusions or imperfection, which are a mark of its natural origin. However, where these do not reduce the diamonds brilliance, they are of minor importance, and should not affect enjoyment of the gemstone although they do substantially lower its cost.
