The Sheaffer Story
Sheaffer's history began
in 1907, in Walter A. Sheaffer's Fort Madison, Iowa.
Jewelry store. The fountain pens of the day were cumbersome
to refill, requiring an eyedropper and a steady hand.
W.A. Sheaffer sought a new method that would be simple,
clean and an improvement in writing comfort.
The result, the first
practical lever filling system fountain pen earned W.A.
Sheaffer a U.S. patent in August of 1908. It featured
a slim metal lever inset into the pen barrel. A single
stroke of the lever filled the reservoir from the ink
bottle without dismantling the pen.
Public reception was enthusiastic,
and in 1903, Walter Sheaffer risked his life savings
to establish the W.A. Sheaffer Pen Company. In the decades
since, the company's commitment to quality and innovation
has fuelled its quest to produce the world finest writing
instruments.

Carrying the
Tradition Forward
Craig R. Sheaffer
grew up in the Sheaffer tradition, assembling
the first Sheaffer pens by hand in the back
room of his fathers store. Craig soon became
interested in research, following in his fathers
footsteps in pursuit of a better writing instrument.
His invention of the Balance Lifetime fountain
pen in 1928 was a revolutionary concept for
its time.
Balance Lifetime
was the first fountain pen designed to place
more of its weight towards the nib. The result
was a lighter, balanced feel, reducing fatigue
and eliminating writer's cramp.
The Balance
Lifetime gained immediate popularity, increasing
Sheaffer's widespread reputation for technical
superiority. C.R. Sheaffer's remarkable invention
spurred the company's growth and remained
an integral part of its product line for more
than 30 years.
